Greenskies Renewable Energy has signed a contract with its home city of Middletown to construct a ground-mounted solar array.
The 217-kilowatt array will be located on city property adjacent to the Higby/Bacon Water Treatment Plant, officials said. It will consist of 714 panels.
Under a 20-year power-purchase contract with Greenskies, Middletown expects to save approximately $14,000 per year in electricity costs from the solar panels.
The array will generate around 272,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year -- enough to displace 531 pounds of carbon dioxide.
Construction is expected to begin this spring.
Construction on the project is scheduled to begin soon, and the array will be up and running by the end of summer, Greenskies said.
